Midwest Visitors

I blogged back in January about my trip back to Indiana and Kentucky to see my dear friends, Wendy and Denice. I wrote that I was not even back on the plane home when they had made their flight reservations to come to Arizona in March. That happened last week over my 60th birthday. What a wonderful time we had. They were here from Saturday, the 24th until Thursday, the 29th.

Robin, Ken and the kids flew in from Boise on that same Saturday afternoon. Since Robin & Ken were going directly to a gallery showing for Roland’s photos, they asked me if I would like to pick up the kids from the airport and keep them for a few hours. I pulled up outside their terminal and Robin ran them out to me. Megan, Steven and I came to my house and had chili and cornbread supper, and watched half of Mary Poppins before it was time to head back to the airport to meet Wendy and Denice. We parked and went into the terminal and waited outside Security. The minute they came through the gate, Robin showed up from the other direction to pick up the kids. What good timing!

We went to Spring of Life Christian Church on Sunday morning, because Ken is working with their staff and that was one of the reasons for their trip here. I had emailed Dianna to see if she and Deidra wanted to join us at service and they did. We enjoyed an inspiring worship time and a great sermon. That afternoon, we headed over to Brian and Carrie’s for my 60th birthday party.

On Monday, we drove down to Tucson so we could revisit our old stomping grounds. We drove around the Flowing Wells district, past our elementary schools, and stopped at Shamrock Dairy in the morning.

It was fun to drive down familiar streets and find businesses and churches that were there 40 years ago still open. We saw Lowry’s Hardware, Oracle Road Rent-All, and Del Norte Baptist in their rightful places, plus many motels and restaurants on Miracle Mile.  Then we went over to the Tucson Mall to meet a cousin of Wendy’s for lunch at the Olive Garden. In the afternoon, we made stops at all our old houses. Denice’s and my Kilburn Road houses are now apartments, but Wendy found her two houses still standing.

Then we went to the high school to walk around.

School was done for the day when we got there, so there were no kids on campus and we were welcomed as alumni by several staff members who asked if they could answer any questions. We went into the office to look around and the assistant principal(??) chatted with us and even offered to open any buildings we wanted to check out. We  found the old gym already open and the basketball team practicing inside.

Old gym. Is that Steve Zeigler?

There is a brand new large gym south of the football field now. The old cafeteria is part of the district offices and there is a new cafe just west of the auditorium (which by the way, has been expanded into a Performing Arts Center). The football stadium looked the same, as did the library, girls’ locker room, and the classrooms with their outside doors.

It still felt like the same place with several improvements, but nothing to erase what made it our school. We arrived back home ready for relaxing in front of the TV and bed. In fact, Denice immediately went to take a nap, and never got back up until the next morning. Poor thing; I tired her out!

On Tuesday, we met up with Glenda for a bit of shopping at the beauty supply house (where she has a professional discount) and lunch at Valle Luna.

That evening we went to Hale Centre Theater to see Nunsense. I had no idea going in what the story was about, but it turned out to be very funny, and the music was great. We really enjoyed our evening out.

On Wednesday, we went to the mall where I spent my birthday money at the Apple store on a new iPad. While I did the initial setup with the Apple technician, Wendy and Denice went to drop some money in a shoe store.

We had a light lunch in the food court and came home for quick naps before going over to Mom’s for dinner. Robin, Ken and the kids were there too, and we each enjoyed goulash, or shrimp, or grilled cheese and tomato soup. It was a fun time with a full table in the Fellowship Square dining room. We had a short visit with Mom back at her apartment before heading home for our last night together.

The girls flew out early Thursday morning, and I went on to work, but the joy of our time together has remained. It was a week to remember and has renewed and deepened our old friendship. I love these two girls!

60th Birthday Party

I turned 60 last week. Yes, a big birthday, to be sure.

A couple of months ago, Denice and Wendy made plans to visit me that same week, so I asked Brian and Carrie if we could have a family dinner at their house while my girlfriends were here instead of them trying to be sneaky and plan a surprise party. They had thrown a big surprise birthday party for Carrie’s mother’s 60th a few years ago, and I suspected they might be up to that same mischief. So they let me be in on the plans, and we started figuring out who would be in town to help us celebrate. Turns out, quite a crowd was on hand to make it a really festive afternoon/evening, and help me eat cake. A couple weeks ago, I found out Robin, Ken and the kids were planning to be in town for spring break and would join us. Richard and Dianna, along with Deidra were also here. Daryl’s family, the Balches, and Mom came along and Derek brought his girlfriend, Stephanie. Glenda and her beau Frank stopped by. All together, I believe we had around 25. Things were a bit chaotic, but couldn’t have been more fun! Brian and Carrie were wonderful hosts and their home is perfect for handling a large crowd. We had a cookout, and the weather was beautiful, so several folks ate outside. Lauren enjoyed it too, and rewarded us with some smiles.

While I was mingling among the crowd, I gave my iPhone to Nathan and asked him to take pictures of everyone. He captured quite a few people, but I’m not sure he has a career as a photographer in his future. Here’s what I found on the disk when he gave it back to me. We are missing Daryl’s family, the Balch boys, Glenda and Frank, and Andrew.

Here’s my cake (courtesy of Heather) and one of those sweet smiles I told you about.

Midwest Visit

I blogged about finding my childhood friend, Denice back in July. As soon as we started communicating, we also started planning our first of many visits. When I thought about my work shutdown in December, it seemed like a perfect time to make a trip back to Paducah, Kentucky. Of course, I couldn’t travel to that vicinity of the country without a stop in Evansville, IN to see my other long-time friend, Wendy. They live just 100 miles apart.

I flew into Evansville on December 29 and spent four days with Wendy and Denny. It was nice weather, cold but with no snow, and we did a bit of driving around, but mostly stayed in just catching up on each others’ lives since our last visit in 2005. Denny has a wedding video business and he had a wedding on Friday night. Wendy is his assistant, operating one of the cameras, so I tagged along with them to the wedding, and then Wendy and I went out for dinner while Denny finished filming the reception.

On Saturday — New Year’s Eve — Wendy and Denny hosted a party and I got to see all their family and closest friends. We had ten times as much yummy food as we could eat, but we gave it a shot. It was a wonderful afternoon, topped off with watching Indiana win their basketball game, seeing the ball drop in Times Square at 11:00, and heading to bed before midnight. I introduced Wendy to geocaching on Sunday afternoon as we went out and picked up four quick “park and grabs”.

On Monday, they drove me down to Marion, Kentucky, which is halfway to Paducah, to meet Denice at Randa’s house. I arrived about 15 minutes ahead of Denice and had a great reunion with Randa. When Denice walked in, the 35 years melted away as we hugged and hugged. Sharion joined us a bit later for dinner and talking. For the next three days, Denice and I reminisced about old times and caught up on the lost years and reconnected our hearts. We drove around some of the local area, visiting her mother’s grave, past Sharion’s house, over to Kentucky Lake (where Denice and Rick have a lake house) and out for dinner. Some of their kids and grandkids stopped by one evening to say hi. The time passed too quickly, and soon was time to head back to the Evansville airport and the flight home.

Before I was on the plane, I had text messages that Denice and Wendy had booked flights to Arizona for the last week of March (which happens to be my 60th birthday and Denice’s 59th). What fun we will have with the three of us together, and a visit with my family in the beautiful springtime desert.

Here are some pictures from my trip.

New iPhone 4S

Here’s a list of 10 things about my new iPhone 4S.

  1. My contract on my iPhone 3GS was up in August and I was more than ready, even eager for an upgrade.
  2. I was disappointed Apple didn’t come out with an iPhone 5 with a larger screen, sleeker design, and 4G data connection.
  3. I gave serious thought to buying an Android phone, specifically the Samsung Galaxy S II. It has a 4.3″ screen (almost a bit too big. 4″ would be perfect), thin and sleek design, and 4G capability.
  4. I held off pre-ordering a new iPhone to do more research, hear what folks thought when they actually had one in their hands, and decide just what I wanted to do.
  5. Factors that weighed in favor of iOS included familiarity and many purchased apps that would not be transferable, as well as (admittedly) brand loyalty.
  6. Don and Ken reminded me I could probably sell the new phone next year if/when an iPhone 5 comes out and I want to upgrade early.
  7. Features on the iPhone 4S that swayed my decision were 3G connection on AT&T that rivals 4G speeds, with better battery life, greatly improved camera, and Siri.
  8. Although Siri is the coolest new feature since sliced bread, it’s also very hit and miss, more miss than hit right now. It’s no secret that it’s in Beta mode, and Apple’s servers (which Siri has to connect to in order to work) don’t seem to be able to keep up with it just yet. But analysts predict it will get better quickly and the future looks bright.
  9. Like every new owner, I have had a lot of fun asking Siri rhetorical and silly questions just to hear the clever answers the Apple development team has come up with. Me: “I’m really tired.” Siri: “Listen to me. Put down this iPhone right now and take a nap. I’ll wait here.” When I persisted that I was tired, she answered. “I hope you’re not driving. Are you?” Or me: “What’s the best phone?” Siri: “Wait, there are other phones?
  10. Overall, I’m very happy with it. I know more time will tell if I made the right decision, but I’m satisfied for now, and glad I made the plunge.
