This recipe also came from Luanne, Robin’s Showlow roommate. I make it on Christmas morning. It’s really pretty and really delicious!
Dough:
¼ C warm water
1 pkg yeast
¾ C scalded lukewarm milk
¼ C sugar
1 tsp salt
1 egg
1 tsp maple flavoring
¼ C soft shortening
3 ½ – 3 ¾ C flour
Filling:
½ C sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp maple flavoring
1/3 C crushed pecans
Glaze:
1 ½ C powdered sugar
¼ tsp maple flavoring
2-3 T milk
Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add milk, sugar, salt, egg, maple flavoring, shortening and half the flour to yeast. Mix until smooth. Add enough remaining flour to handle easily. Turn onto floured board. Knead until smooth, about 5 minutes. Round up in greased bowl. Cover with cloth and let rise in warm place until double.
Divide dough into 3 equal balls. Roll one into 12” circle. Set on greased pizza pan. Brush with 2 T melted butter and sprinkle with 1/3 C filling. Continue with two more layers ending with filling. (You will use a total of 6 T melted butter.)
With a 2” glass, mark the center. Press down lightly, but not cutting into dough. Cut to circle into 16 wedges. Twist each wedge 3 times. Let rise until double in size. Bake 20-25 minutes at 350°. Drizzle with warm glaze.
