Those Amazing Suns!

Wow! What a game last night. I called Daryl at the end of regulation and asked if he was watching the game. He said he was, but was way behind on Tivo (he was still in the 3rd quarter with the Suns down by 13), so I couldn’t talk to him about the exciting comeback. I had to wait about 45 minutes after the end of overtime before he called back to say he had just seen the end. Then we discussed the great game.

I babysat the kids last night while Brian and Carrie went out with Roland and his fiance… they are in town for the weekend. When they came back to pick up the kids, Nathan wanted to stay at my house, so he spent the night. He slept until almost 7 am this morning, which is late for him over here … he’s usually up by 6. After eating pancakes while watching “The AristoCats”, his daddy picked him up and I did my Saturday errands.

I’m shopping for a new cell phone. I have had mine for almost 5 years. I am considering swapping carriers, so have done some research online (consumer reports) and also went to a few places. Haven’t made up my mind yet … I’m going to see what my current carrier, Alltel, will do first to keep me as a customer. They have got to eliminate the roaming charges or I’m switching. With the travel I have planned this year, I wouldn’t be able to afford to use my cell phone if I had to pay the exorbitant rates I’ve been charged for roaming.

New series starts tomorrow against the Spurs. Should be great. GO Suns!!!

Visit to Oklahoma

The day after I returned from Cancun, I flew to Oklahoma for my last visit to the house on Hollywood in Norman. The Holsingers are moving to Anchorage sometime in June.

I arrived on May 6, which was the day after Megan’s birthday. (Yes, she is a Cinco de Mayo baby like Heather.) Robin had planned her birthday party at a place near the university called “Bath Junkie”. It’s a little shop where you can mix your own bath products and fragrances. Megan had six little friends at her party, and they all made colored bubble bath salts and lotion. Megan chose “Dreamsicle” and “Fruitie Tootie” (or something like that!) and so most of the other little girls also picked those same fragrances. We had a fancy cake from a fancy bakery, the evening was fun and the house was left untouched. Since they were showing the house for sale, it seemed like a good idea to have the mess at another place.

I had not seen Steven since December, and he has grown and changed so much. I think he looks like Ken, and I think Megan looks like Ken, but I don’t really think Megan and Steven look alike. Now how does that work??? Of course, he is the most beautiful 8 month old in the world! No one would dispute that! He’s a happy baby, and I had lots of loving and kisses to catch up on.

If you have stopped by my picture gallery, you have seen all the beautiful photos of Steven and Megan. The last time the Holsingers spent hundreds of dollars on professional pictures, Ken decided the next time to spend that money on a nice camera and start taking their own pictures. He has become quite the photo enthusiast, and his pictures are really, really good. Most of the ones of Robin, Megan and Steven in the gallery were his. I also posted some pictures he has taken of churches around the world. He makes black and white prints and frames them, and they are beautiful. They have several hung around their house and they are truly works of art.

We went to church and out for dinner on Mother’s Day, and then Robin and I went out to the mall in the afternoon. She got me the fourth tiny birthstone ring for my pendant and now Steven’s September birthday is represented.

As I mentioned in the last post, they sold their house just a few days after I got back. Megan’s dance recital is this Saturday evening, and she finishes school on May 31. That’ll about wrap up their commitments in Norman, and they will be making their way North To Alaska! I’m planning a week long visit up there this fall on my sabbatical. It will be lots of fun visiting with all the Holsingers of Alaska.

Be sure to check the photo gallery. Brian posted new pictures of their home construction. It’s framed and roof trusses are up. It’s starting to take shape!

Great News!

Robin and Ken sold their house! They got a really good offer, plus lots of time to close (July), so they are feeling great. Ken’s mom comes to town next week and they are planning a yard sale while she is there, and timing works well for that too. No more people coming through the house; they can begin to prepare for their move.

Go Suns! (What a grrrreat game last night, huh?)

Let’s see … where did I leave off?

My Cancun visit with Wendy and Dennis was awesome. What a great place to have a reunion and catch up with one another’s lives. Their son and his family, Chad, Jill and Kaylee, were there. Kaylee won everyone’s hearts with her darling smile and twinkling eyes. At 16 months, she is full of personality, and friendly with everyone. I got several good pictures of her; be sure to check them out.

Jill and I took an excursion to Tulum, about 25 miles from the resort, on Monday. It was built by the Mayan Mexicans 1000 years ago. It is now a federal park, protected and maintained by the government, but many organizations offer tours. We took one sponsored by our travel company (FunJet), and the guide was 80% Mayan. He added a lot of personal insight and commentary to his talk. Unfortunately, the day was so hot, I nearly had a heat stroke and had to sit in the shade for the last part of the tour. Lots of people were suffering as I was, and several took a dip in the ocean. I didn’t think I could make it down the cliff and back up, so didn’t take advantage of that.

Every evening, the resort offered entertainment performed by the “Star Friends“. We took in three shows: a movie review, a Broadway review, and a famous couples competition. Prior to the start of each show, they had a kids program and an audience participation event. Some of them were really funny, and some were a bit raunchy or just plain silly. But all were lots of fun and the Bahama Mama’s helped make them more so. ;o)

There are activities throughout the day at the resort, including water aerobics, scuba diving, para sailing, kayak and wave runner rental, dance lessons, games, roaming Mariachi bands, and the list goes on. Shopping is available (of course!) at the resort, across the street from the resort, a 5 minute taxi ride into town, outside Tulum, in the airport, etc. I looked over goods at all of the aforementioned places and left several of my pesos with the good people of Mexico. Of course, I am assured I got the best specials, just for me, discounted today only, almost nothing! That was the running commentary of every vendor we walked by. When you ask “how much?” they ask “how much you want to pay?” If only it were that easy!

I’ve never been to another resort like this, but everyone who has, says the Iberostar is at the top of the list. I certainly have no desire to try any other one in the Cancun area. In fact, I would like to go back (with the Allyns) in 2007. Since I have my big sabbatical trips this fall, I’m sure I will be out of funds for any such vacation next year. But I’ll go back someday … count on it!

I flew home on Thursday evening, and Alice had arrived in town just a few hours before I did. She spent the night with me, and we talked non-stop all evening and went out for breakfast on Friday morning. She dropped me at the airport at 11:15 and I caught a flight to Oklahoma, arriving in time for Megan‘s 6th birthday party. I’ll tell you all about that next time. Be sure to tune in.

GO Suns!!

Back from Paradise

Hola! Soy a devolver de Mexico! Y soy a devolver de Oklahoma, tambien.

Yes, I am home from my travels. My, what a wonderful time I had. Cancun was beautiful and relaxing, just as I had hoped. I’ve posted pictures on my gallery. The resort is right on the beach. We had a few cloudy days, and rain one afternoon. Cancun in May is hot and humid … just perfect for spending the days in the water. The ocean was cooler than the pool, but both were wonderful. The beach has the softest sand I have ever walked in.

The resort is really two hotels, the Iberostar Tucan and the Iberostar Quetzal. They sit perpendicular to the beach and are separated by a beautiful jungle filled with animals and foilage. My room was on the second floor in building 23 on the Quetzal side, and my terrace faced the jungle. The monkeys played outside my room every afternoon. Most days as I walked to the buffet, I had to walk around the peacocks on the path. The one time I went to breakfast without my camera, I saw a peacock spreading his tail feathers for a peahen and following her down the hill. She seemed much less impressed than I was!

The food! The food! The food! There’s one word to describe it … MMMMMMMM! The buffet, which is open for three meals a day, is a walk in open-air dining room, with literally hundreds of dishes. Everything from fruit, soups, salads, vegetables, meats, desserts; really every imaginable dish of every imaginable cuisine. We ate in on-site “ala carte” restaurants three times, and I never had better ravioli or steak, and the tacos included avocado, lime and pineapple. I tried to take some desserts back to my room one night, but that is against the rules. I’m sure many people would try to take advantage by secreting unregistered guests in their rooms; plus dropped food on the jungle paths could be a real problem. So I had to satiate myself in the eating areas, but I can barely remember a moment when I wasn’t stuffed.

You all know I’m not much of a drinker, but those Bahama Mamas are the cat’s meow! Don’t worry, I wasn’t driving! (And I wasn’t tipsy, either. I didn’t drink THAT much!) But some of the group did some worshiping at the porcelain shrine. Glad that wasn’t me. 🙂

I’m still trying to catch up on my rest. It was hard to go back to work after such a wonderful vacation. I have lots more to tell, and I will over the next few days. I went to Oklahoma for four days after my Cancun trip, and there are pictures of the Holsingers posted also. Ken has a top notch camera, and most of the pictures were taken by him. I’ll get mine up soon.

Meanwhile, GO Suns. Adios!

Cancun, Here I Come!

I’m leaving on Saturday morning for 5 days in beautiful Cancun. I’m joining my girlhood friend, Wendy, and 17 of her family and friends for a vacation of relaxing fun at the 5 star resort, Iberostar Tucan. This is my first resort vacation ever (with the exception of Walt Disney World with the kids) and I’ve been told this one is like a cruise on land. It’s all inclusive, meaning all the food and alcohol I can consume. I’m sure they will be sorry they ever extended that option to me!! Like I’m going to get my money’s worth on that? NOT!! But I will get my money’s worth on relaxing and walking on the beach and shopping and most of all, enjoying spending time with Wendy and her gang.

As soon as I get home from Cancun, I turn right around the next morning and head to Oklahoma. I’m getting in one last visit with the Holsinger clan before they move to Alaska this summer. I haven’t seen them since December, and Steven, especially, has grown leaps and bounds in 5 months, plus he had his eye surgery since then, so I’m sure will look different. We’ll celebrate Megan’s 6th birthday and Mother’s Day while I am there. By the way, Robin told me yesterday that she and Ken found and bought a piece of property in Eagle River (where Ken’s parents live just outside Anchorage) and they will build their custom home there. More on that in future posts.

On the one night I am home between trips, Alice is in town and will spend the night with me. We’ll have just an evening and breakfast together for me to catch up on her new granddaughter, Kinsley, born in March.

So I won’t be writing again for several days. When I get home, I’ll post an update about my trip(s) and plenty of pictures. ‘Til then…

Oh yeah, GO Suns!
