It’s been 101 days since the Valley of the Sun has had a drop of rain. That matches the longest we have ever gone. Tomorrow it will be a record 102 days and there is no rain in sight. Experts predict we are in for a terrible fire season this year because everything is so dry. Hey, west coast, send us some rain!

I thought we did a week or so ago but I guess you dodged it. We’re a little drier than we were last year too.
Actually, I think last year was worse for fires just because the winter was so wet, then the spring and summer so dry. Lots of winter ephemerals (“annuals” for you non-botanists) grew big from the rains, then dried out providing fire fodder. This year there is no new growth, so no new tinder to burn. It’s only some of the perennials that may die to add new fuel, but I don’t think that’s too bad yet.
But we could still have a bad fire season even if the risk is not as great as last year, right?
It seems like a lot of records have been broken in the last year or so. Last year we came within a half inch of the wetest year on record. Seattle came close or broke a record for rainy days this month. Now Phoenix is trying to break a dry days record. Watch out for dogs and cats sleeping together.
Or Republicans and Democrats!
Has it been 109 days now?
109 going on 115. Still no rain in this week’s forecast.
Last night I happened to catch a newscaster on the radio interviewing Steve Bourassa (one of Daryl’s high school friends). Steve is a helicopter pilot, forest fire fighter. Our governor is trying to increase Arizona’s fire fighting teams in preparation for a bad season.
