How many share your name?

From a friend’s blog, I linked to this site. I thought it was fun and interesting to check names I know. I felt pretty common after finding I share my name with 1067 others (including the famous TV actress), but all of my brothers and Robin have more unique names. Ken and Mom are the only ones with their names. However, Gisele wins the prize. According to this site, there is no one in the U.S. with her name (including her, apparently!)

Camden and Carsten do not share their name with anyone else. I have 9 other people and Mark had 26 matches. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Richard says:

Dianna is the only one with her name!

  3. Alice says:

There are 48 people in the U.S. named Alice Swartz.

  4. Don says:

    There are 0 Punky Brewsters.

Maybe we will name our 9th child Punky Brewster. There needs to be at 1 in this world!

Apparently Gisele doesn’t live in the US. Either that or she is registered under her maiden name (Gisele Chen). There is one with that name.

Devon is unique, but Derek shares his name with 4 others.

Dianna is unique both with her married name and maiden name.

This is a fun site, though I bet it will get old pretty quickly.

Looking closely at this, I don’t think they really have a list of everybody in the US. I think they have a list of surnames, given names, and the probability of having each. Then they just multiply probabilities together to get an estimation of actual people.

The problem with this approach is that certain surnames and given names are more likely to go together. For example, “Chen” is slightly more common than “Cervantes”. So they show that Miguel Chen is slightly more common than Miguel Cervantes. But I really doubt that this is true!

Daryl, I figured that right from the beginning. Although it does say the info is based on the census, I believe, like you, that it is just calculating the probability. When you put in Gisele’s married name, it says “not likely”, which pretty much proves it is a calculation, not real facts from some sort of database.

But it’s still fun to see what names are more common than others. Mine is definitely more common than Mom’s or Gisele’s. In fact, there is another patient at my own doctor’s office with my name. I always have to give them my birth date when I call or go in so they pull the right chart.
