I got a Sony Reader for Christmas, but decided to exchange it for a reader that I could synchronize with my iPhone. I have been using the Kindle app for almost a year and thought that was what I wanted. However, when I did just a little research, I discovered the Kindle cannot download library books and that was a very important feature for me. The Barnes & Noble Nook does library books and purchased books, has a large selection of free books on Barnes & Noble’s website, and also has an sync-able app for the iPhone, so I decided to go with that. I made my exchange at Walmart on December 30.
After setting up my Nook account, downloading a few books from both the B&N website and the Phoenix Digital Library, and having the Nook in my hands for several hours, I began to have second thoughts about the product and kept thinking about that smaller, thinner, lighter-weight Kindle. The inability to access library books nagged at me less and less, and the more I held the Nook in my hand, the less satisfied I became. I decided to exchange it for a Kindle.
Today I cleared my account from the Nook, reset the factory settings, and took it back to Walmart. When I presented it at the customer service counter, the clerk told me e-readers may only be returned within 14 days of purchase. I am 10 days too late.
Now I want a Kindle, but cannot return my Nook. And now I know how Daryl felt when he got his MDX. At least I know he finally became happy, so I probably will, too. I have found that your perspective usually changes when your options vanish.
Oh, dear! You thought it was 30 days. I’ll let you read my Kindle once in a while, when I’m not using it (which is a rare occasion–only when I’m reading Miss Julia books from the library).
Well, I suggest you put a fabulous library book on there and I bet you’ll feel better about it! The Kindle really is a great device. I’ve not used the Nook reader, but I bet in time you’ll be happy with it. Did you get the color version?
Oh Lisa, that’s such a smart idea!
Dilemma solved! I took the Nook to Walmart tonight prepared to beg my case with a manager, but the gal at the return desk didn’t even bat an eye, just gave me my money back. I’ve ordered my Kindle.
I know I like my Kindle a lot, and it’s a generation older than yours will be. Did you get the 3G version, or Wi-Fi?
There are lots more books available for the Kindle than Amazon has, and many of them free or at least cheaper than Amazon. When you get it, I will give you some links.
By the way, this blue on starry black color combo for comments is very hard to read, even after having my secondary cataract removed.
Yeah, I don’t like the popup comments box on this theme, but I like the cold winter scene for January. Two ways you can get around it: Click on the post title (instead of the home page or comments link) and see the comments below the entry; or use a blog feeder/reader.
BTW, I got the 3G. I don’t feel the need for Wi-Fi. Someday I’ll have an iPad to do all the web surfing I want on a “purse-size” device.
Or I can just highlight the text in the comments to make them readable.
What’s the ETA on your new Kindle?
I did free shipping, so ~5-7 days. I look for it by the end of the week.
It arrived today!
So how is it? Downloaded anything to read yet?
I had several books already downloaded to the app on my iPhone, so I just sync-ed my account. I spent the evening reading the User Guide. I like it! I have to decide what to do about a case/cover. Don’t want anything too heavy or bulky.
